Forests cover just over one third of Portugal's land area, 20% of which are within protected areas. The annual rate of deforestation over the period 1990-2015 was 0.3% (FAO, 2015). Illegal logging is not a significant problem in Portugal. As an EU Member State, Portugal is required to implement the EU Timber Regulation, which came into force in March 2013.
