Peru

Nearly 60% of Peru’s land area is forested, of which nearly 90% is classified as primary forest, one of the highest percentages in the world. Deforestation rates have been relatively low since 1990, at an average annual rate of 0.2% (FAO, 2015).

There has been widespread illegal logging in the country. Enforcement and monitoring of the sector have increased since the establishment in 2009 of an independent agency, OSINFOR, to oversee the sector (EIA, 2015).
