Forests cover only 2% of Pakistan’s land area. Rates of deforestation have been increasing in the country; the annual deforestation rate was 1.8% between 1990 and 2000, and 2.7% between 2010 and 2015 (FAO, 2015).

Illegal logging is widespread in the country, and the smuggling of timber across the border to Afghanistan has been a particular problem. The government has responded by imposing restrictions on the transport of timber within the country.
