Illegal logging is a problem in the country. As an EU Member State, Latvia is required to implement the EU Timber Regulation, which came into force in March 2013.
Forests account for half of Latvia’s land area, over half of which are state-owned. Forest cover has increased slightly over the period 1990-2015, at an annual rate of 0.2%. At the same time, the area of plantations has been declining; they accounted for just under 20% of forest cover in 2015 (FAO, 2015).
