Guyana

Over 80% of Guyana’s land area is covered by forests, 40% of which are primary forests. Forest cover has remained fairly constant over the past two decades, with low rates of deforestation in the country (FAO, 2015).

In 2010, Guyana and Norway established the Guyana REDD+ Investment Fund (GRIF), through which Norway will pay Guyana for limiting its greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation and forest degradation and for progress made against governance-related indicators (Norwegian Government, 2010). In May 2012, the country also entered into formal negotiations for a voluntary partnership agreement (VPA) with the EU (EFI).
