Colombia

Over half of Colombia’s land area is covered by forests. The annual rate of deforestation was 0.4% between 1990 and 2015 (FAO, 2015).

Illegal logging is a serious problem in Colombia. An ‘Intersectoral Pact for Legal Timber’ was established in 2009 between the government, NGOs and the private sector, with the aim of promoting legal and sustainable forest management (Corzo Garcia, 2014). The country is a member of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO) and has worked with the other seven member countries to develop strategies aimed at curbing illegal logging in the Amazon (IISD, 2012).
