Illegal logging is a major problem in Honduras. The country is home to a number of valuable hardwoods, such as mahogany, which are the target for illegal logging and trafficking. Much of this timber is exported to the US and EU. In 2013, Honduras became the first country in central and south America to enter into formal VPA negotiations with the EU (EFI ).
About 40% of the land area of Honduras is covered by forests, just 10% of which is primary forest. The country has experienced a high rate of deforestation over the past two decades. For the period 2010-15, the annual rate of deforestation was 2.4% (FAO, 2015).
