Prohibited permits: ongoing illegitimate & illegal trade in CITES-listed rosewoods in Asia
A new briefing by the Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) concerning serious, ongoing enforcement failures in the protection of endangered rosewood species.
Prohibited Permits has been prepared for the 3rd Regional Dialogue on Preventing Illegal Logging and Trade in Siamese Rosewood, held in Bangkok from March 29-31, 2017.
Virtually all trade in the species has been characterised by crime, fake and illegitimate permits, structural failures in permit verification and the killings of hundreds of illegal loggers and dozens of forest rangers. EIA’s briefing outlines the core and structural problems that persist - centred around Laos, China and Vietnam - and suggests potential solutions to them.
