Gabon

85% of Gabon’s land area is covered in forests, a figure that has stayed constant over the past twenty years. However, the area of primary forest has been decreasing, and this is currently estimated to represent just over half of the total forest area (EFI; FAO, 2015).

Gabon’s forests are entirely state-owned, and about half of the country’s forests are allocated for production (FAO, 2015). Timber is the country's second most important export after oil; 90% of its log production is exported, mainly to China and the EU (EFI).

Gabon began negotiations for a voluntary partnership agreement (VPA) with the EU in September 2010.
