Equatorial Guinea

Nearly 60% of Equatorial Guinea is covered by tropical rainforest. Prior to the discovery of extensive oil and gas reserves, Equatorial Guinea’s forests represented the country’s main export resource.

An export ban on logs has been in place since 2007, introduced by the government in an attempt to protect the country’s forests. However, there has been little change in the annual rate of deforestation since the ban was introduced. The annual rate of deforestation during the period 2000-15 was 0.7 % (FAO, 2015).
