Illegal Logging in Ghana: Development Brief

This study confirms that illegal logging constitutes a serious problem in Ghana. The annual harvest is conservatively estimated at approximately 3.3m m3 against the annual allowable cut 1.0m m3, ie. 70% of the annual harvest in Ghana is illegal. The authors conclude that forest management regulations introduced in the 1990s are not working in practice, and that illegal logging is a symptom and result of this failure. They believe fundamental reforms of the management regime are needed to tackle illegal logging.
