DEFRA Consultation on Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade Licensing Scheme

The EU Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) Action Plan sets out the European Commission's innovative approach to tackling illegal logging. One of its measures requires the Commission to propose a voluntary licensing scheme. When operational, the scheme would mean that timber originating in a FLEGT Partner Country could not be imported into the EU without such a license. DEFRA is currently consulting on the impacts and implications of such a scheme. The consultation closes on 11th Auguest 2005, but early responses are requested.
