The Forestry Code and Science: Contributions for Dialogue

The document has been put together by a working group of scientists and other stakeholders under the umbrella of the ABC and SBPC. The scientific considerations contained in this document contribute to the dialogue which Brazilian society is currently having about possible alterations to the Brazilian Forest Code. The authors note that the report is not a detailed analysis of the provisions of the current Forest Code.

The work was inspired by the perspective of new concepts and new technological instruments for territorial planning and organisation focused on stimulating the increase of production and of agricultural productivity in synergy with environmental sustainability.

The authors say that the scientific community recognises the importance of agriculture in the Brazilian and worldwide economy, as well as the importance of improving the Forest Code to meet the new reality in Brazil and in the world at large. They believe any improvement should be carried forward in light of science, with the definition of parameters which consider the multifunctionality of the Brazilian landscape, ensuring compatibility between production and conservation as pillars of a development model that ensures sustainability. By doing so, they say, it will be possible to reach decisions guided by scientific recommendations which are agreed upon by rural producers, legislators and civil society.
