This material has been funded by UKaid from the Department for International Development, with additional support from the European Forest Institute's EU FLEGT Facility. The EU FLEGT Facility is funded by the European Union, the Governments of Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, and the European Forest Institute. However the views expressed do not necessarily reflect the official policies and views of either DfID or EFI.

Finland has 20 million hectares of highly productive softwood forests, many of which are plantations.
In 2003 the Finnish forestry industry accounted for 3 percent of the jobs in the country, 4 percent of GDP, 17 percent of total industrial production and almost 25 percent of exports by value. The pulp and paper industry makes up around 80 percent of these figures. EU member states are the main market for these exports, particularly Germany and the UK.
In addition to the output of Finnish forests, around 23 percent of the raw materials processed in the pulp and paper sector are imported, mainly from Russia and the Baltic states.
Finland also manufactures and exports pulp and paper machinery to other timber producing and processing countries.
