Denmark is not a particularly significant market for tropical timber imported into the European Union.
Although Danish forests are small, they are relatively productive as a result of intensive management and over 98 percent of imports are non-tropical, mostly from Russia. Forest and other wooded land accounts for only one eighth of the land area, of which three quarters are covered with plantations.
Where tropical timber is imported, the majority is sawnwood, accounting for 80 thousand cubic metres in 2002 and plywood, in the region of 45 thousand cubic metres in the same year.
Much of this is used by Danish public authorities, particularly in weather proof public works such as harbour construction. As a result of this the Danish parliament recently agreed that central government should adjust public procurement policies in order to ensure that purchases of tropical timber would be based only on legal and sustainable sources. Guidelines for purchasers were published in June 2003.
