CZECH REPUBLIC

34 percent of the Czech Republic's land area is covered with forest according to FAO figures from 2000.

In the same year, official statistics state that these produced 13.5 million cubic metres of roundwood, 4.35 million cubic metres of sawnwood and 512 thousand tonnes of pulp. An increasing majority of the timber produced is processed domestically and exported to other EU member states as furniture and other timber products, representing one of the most significant assets in the country's balance of trade.

Official statements suggest that illegal logging is virtually unknown in the Czech Republic but NGOs assert that it was a problem in the 1990s but has been brought under a reasonable degree of control by enforcement incentives and training for government agents.
