FINANCED BY:
This material has been funded by UKaid from the Department for International Development, with additional support from the European Forest Institute's EU FLEGT Facility. The EU FLEGT Facility is funded by the European Union, the Governments of Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, and the European Forest Institute. However the views expressed do not necessarily reflect the official policies and views of either DfID or EFI.

In 2001 the UK imported over 11.5 million cubic metres of timber and sheet material making the UK the third biggest net importer of timber after China and Japan.
However the vast majority of this trade was in temperate softwood (65.2 percent). Only 6.7 percent was tropical in origin of which 5.4 percent was hardwood plywood and 1.3 percent was solid timber. In EU terms the UK accounts for around 12 percent of all tropical hardwood imports into the EU compared to 20 percent for softwoods imports.
The UK's main tropical timber trade partners are Indonesia, Malaysia and, to a lesser extent, Cameroon.
UK timber products markets are increasingly sensitive to questions of legality and sustainability, particularly since the inception of a government procurement policy which requires that timber and forest products supplying government contracts comes from demonstrably legal and ideally sustainably managed sources. The policy covers all central government contracts, estimated to be around 15 percent of the national market, and local authorities may also adopt it voluntarily. In practice certification schemes are probably the simplest way to satisfy the demands of the policy, but, in line with EU procurement law, equivalent evidence is also acceptable. Evidence from industry and certification bodies suggests that the policy has already had an impact on the UK and to some extent broader EU market, and this is set to grow as effective implementation spreads across government agencies.
The UK's Timber Trade Federation has been particularly responsive to this pressure, implementing a responsible purchasing policy for its members and developing the EU Timber Trade Action plan with the Dutch and Belgian federations.

| Forest Footprint Disclosure project, UK | The Forest Footprint Disclosure Project (FFD Project) is a new UK government-supported initiative, created to help investors identify how an organisations activities and supply chains contribute to tropical deforestation, and link this 'forest footprint' to their value. It aims to create transparency and shed light on a key challenge within investor portfolios, where currently there is little quality information. Participating companies will be asked to disclose how their operations and supply chains are impacting forests worldwide, and what is being done to manage those impacts responsibly. They will also gain a better understanding of their own environmental dependencies, and how the changing climate and new regulatory frameworks could affect access to resources and the cost of doing business in the long term. | Broken link |
