ITTO

The International Tropical Timber Organisation (ITTO) is an intergovernmental organisation promoting the conservation and sustainable management, use and trade of tropical forest resources. Its 59 members represent about 80 per cent of the world's tropical forests and 90 per cent of the global tropical timber trade.

The ITTO has drawn its mandate from a series of International Tropical Timber Agreements, stretching back to the first one, agreed in 1983. The current ITTA 1994 will be superseded by the ITTA 2006, which is expected to enter into force in 2008.

ITTO funds projects on forest law enforcement and has conducted a study of import and export data discrepancies; in 2005, in cooperation with FAO, ITTO published a report identifying best practices to improve law compliance in the forest sector, based on the experiences of countries in Asia, Latin America and Africa.
