Niger is one of the world's poorest countries, with very little forest cover. Its economy is centres on subsistence farming, livestock and some of the worlds largest uranium deposits. A combination of droughts, desertification, a population growth rate of 3.3% and a recent drop in the global demand for uranium have put severe pressures on the economy, and speeded up the process of deforestation.
Since 1990, Niger has lost 35% of its natural forest cover. Only 1% of the land area is now forested, of which 17% is primary forest. Former forested areas suffer from soil loss and desertification as the Sahara expands. In an effort to slow the Sahara's expansion, the government planted more than 60 million trees between 1985 and 1997. The country's biodiversity is threatened by poaching and habitat loss.
The Forest Governance Learning Group (FGLG) is working with partners in Niger to improve governance and enforcement, and increase community participation in resource management.
